Artist Statement

My work is about connecting my identity as an immigrant from the Philippines with the social landscape around me. I explore this idea in several mediums and artistic styles. Most recently, I have been creating weavings out of materials such as yarn, fabric and plastic recycled from friends and family and salvaged from my local shops that are traditionally owned, run and supported by immigrants. These materials provide connections with the histories of my community. I use these weavings to create anything from installations to sculptural masks to monsters to wall hangings. I perform in these masks and use them in photographic, video and drawn self portraits. I also do participatory artworks that seek to involve the community at large.

My intent is to draw viewers into a space where both they and myself as the artist are implicated and reflected, questioning assumptions and norms that legitimize negative social structures. I use art as a call to arms, creating works to encourage cultural and social understanding.

Some of my influences come from a stew of sources: Edward Said, Guy Debord, magic realism, surrealism, Paula Rego, Shirin Neshat, Kiki Smith, Marisol Escobar, Thomas Hirschhorn.
